I had the pleasure of going to the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts to discuss contracts on Friday.  Although I’m working with friends on different aspects of Roykirk I think it’s always important to have a legal intermediary that makes sure everything is clear and agreed upon and most importantly LEGAL… because it’s not about what’s right or about what’s wrong it’s about what’s legal.  So for those out there starting a business or any sort of business endeavor go get yourself legal representation to cover yourself.  It will definitely cost you money, but this is an investment protecting you from things that could happen to you in the future.

I met today with the founder of Domestic Aesthetic and had a very exciting conversation.  We spoke about sustainability and going green.  Although I have yet to find a space, we discussed the benefits of recycling rain water as well as solar energy.  I don’t know what a landlord will allow me to do but I made note to ask realtors the next time I look at a space.  

I was worried about paper plates, because I didn’t think they would be durable enough for our food, and I didn’t want to use traditional plastics because of how damaging it is to the environment.  However, we sat down and reviewed some options that would be environment-friendly and I was shocked and amazed at the quality of everything.  The items looked great and I never thought I would be excited by a container.  If things go as well as I hope, I’ll be documenting the evolution of our compostable container.

So I THOUGHT I was incorporated but thanks to human error, the government wrote down my home address incorrectly, so I’m in S-Corp limbo.  Waiting to hear back from my tax attorney to see how to fix this problem.  Literally, the government had to out out of their way to screw up my address.  However, thanks to the fact that I’m a sole proprietorship, I can open up a business account without having all of the official stuff in place.

Tasting with Dave Martin went incredibly well.  He also did preliminary costing for Roykirk (how much cooking hardware will cost, salaries, projections for overhead, etc.) so I’m going to plug those numbers when I get back from vacation.  Also when I get back I’ll be a fully formed S-Corp.  It’s kind of like when you are at a restaurant, you leave the table to go to the bathroom, and your food is at your table when you return.
